Rise Above

Sometimes we find ourselves bogged down by pressures, problems, and pains of this world and only become more drained whenever we try to carry, explain, or address them. Reason being is some things aren’t worth the fight, energy, and entertainment. We must discern the mindsets, people, situations, and insecurities that are pure distractions sent to lead us off course, traveling in circles, and stuck in a rut. The only way to overcome some obstacles is to rise above them. There is always a lesson to be learned but first we have to get up and see the bigger picture. Whenever we take ourselves out of the place of emotion, lift our spirits, and re-examine ourselves and issues from an elevated...

Mutt Manes and Creole Curls

I, like many women, have always had a love hate relationship with my natural curly/wavy hair. As a child I was teased and called things like poodle, had people tell me they could tell I was a mutt because of my curly fro and an assortment of other ignorant things til this day. Truth is, this is a common theme and many are left with the idea that their natural self isn’t enough so they must change it. Open Eyes and Open Arms

Though it's often difficult to let go of the rejections that crushed us, the weight of the people that hurt us, and the losses and personal shortcomings that left us broken; we have to. We will miss the opportunities and gifts waiting ahead of us, if we continue to hold the magnifying glass down to the pains behind us or the distractions around us. As long as we hold on to the burdens of bitterness, we will never have space to harness or see the beauty of our blessings. Be thankful that we not only got through difficult times, but also thrived in spite of them. Be proud of the endurance, strength, humility, and understanding we gained and focus on...

When Your Pain Turns to Power

You quit giving energy to burdens and start counting your blessings. You see how each obstacle was an opportunity to grow and without trials, triumphs and tests you’d have no testimony. You stop becoming distracted and disoriented by the hate, falsities, rejections, and judgments the world spews, and begin using them as inspiration because you know that in time every word will be reaped and eaten. You recognize that there is a revelation in every true and seasonal friendship and absorb the lessons that each person that crossed your path provided you. You see roles various people play in your life, just where they stand, and who really matters. You become more grateful for each loved one and hold them...

I'm Walking in Joy

There’s a joy in my heart that can’t be contained and a song in my soul that I can’t stop singing. It doesn’t come from perfection, people pleasing, or profits. It doesn’t come from the opinions of others, outside validation, or anything the world can ever give. My joy drips from the cup of change and the breaking of mental, spiritual, and emotional chains. I’ve learned from the challenges of chastising and pressures of pruning, and have grown to honor my journey, love myself fully, and be still and know that God has not only made way, but always has the final say. All things are working together for my good. So excuse the contagious laughter that freedom has given...
